I drive through Preston’s busy city, the streets crowded, lights on everywhere, noises infiltrating the car, drowning the music under it. It’s as if the city is a living organ, its pulse penetrating my body and taking over, pumping my blood for me, tunneling my thoughts. I get why B and Falcon spend so much time in the clubs, in the middle of this. It’s numbing.

There’s a high chance of being like them if I didn’t already have my own ways of drowning.

When I reach a specific street, Ada straightens, rubbing her eyes, her posture alert from her earlier borderline comatose state. She’s been here before, and it makes me slightly homicidal, knowing she’s been around them.

It needs a surprising amount of strength not to bump into a gray Audi TT as I park my Camaro behind it in the dark driveway, not because I couldn’t see it but because it’s Quentin fucking Valentino’s car, and I’d like to drive over the whole damn dude.

“What are we doing here?” Ada asks suspiciously, her brows creased. “This is... Cierra’s home, isn’t it?”

“You need to speak with her, and I have to check a few things with Quentin. We won’t be long, though.” I reach over the console and rub her thigh soothingly before getting out of the car, automatically touching the gun at my hip, under the waistband of my sweatpants, hidden under my hoodie. I don’t like to carry a gun without a holster, but recently, since Ada’s been around, I’ve been feeling like I should sleep with one under my pillow to keep her safe.

The dog barks even before I close the door of my Camaro behind me, the sound vicious, a vision of sharp teeth and drool flashing in my head. It’s smart, though, I’ll give the Order and their fucking sons that, to keep animals like that close. They don’t lie, and no one can buy their loyalty.

It’s funny that a fucking animal, a feral beast, is more trustworthy than the people closest to you. It makes you wonder how messed up the human mind is when even a dog knows what loyalty means, but a human doesn’t.

“Have you been here before?” Ada asks quietly, rounding the car since the front door to the house is on my side. She reaches for my hand, entwining our fingers, and it’s so surprising, after her back and forth, and maybe because we’re kind of public, that I forget the question for a moment.

“Inside?” I shake my head. “No. But I’ve been picking up Tiger, and well, I’ve also done my job, so.”

“Of course, you have,” she says, and I have no clue what she means by that, and then I don’t have time to ask when the front door opens, and a tall and lean figure takes over the threshold. The dog is still growling behind him, and I know he could tell him to fucking stop, but he won’t. He only stares at me with one dark brow arched, one hand on the door, one on the frame out of sight.
